COBOURG, Ont. - Police are investigating after a cougar was spotted northeast of Cobourg, Ont., on Tuesday night.

Provincial police say a resident saw the big cat on his driveway (in the Cranberry Lake Road and County Road 23 area) in Alnwick-Haldimand Township around 9 p.m.

The man described the animal as brown and weighing nearly 70 kilograms.

It was last seen heading into a nearby wooded area.

The Ministry of Natural Resources has been notified, and police have increased patrols in the neighbourhood.

Police say any sightings of the cougar should be reported immediately to them, and people should use extreme caution around the animal.
