TORONTO - Ontario's Progressive Conservatives say former Ornge CEO Chris Mazza should be in jail, not working in the emergency room of a Thunder Bay hospital.

Mazza was fired as the head of the Ornge air ambulance service after he set up a complex web of spin-off companies that are the subject of a special investigation by the Ontario Provincial Police.

PC critic Frank Klees told the legislature today that Mazza did serious damage to the air ambulance service and saddled taxpayers with millions of dollars of debt because of his bad management, and should not be in the emergency ward.

Health Minister Deb Matthews says hospitals hire doctors independently, and it's up to the College of Physicians and Surgeons to determine if a doctor is fit to practice.

Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre recently lost six full-time doctors and hired Mazza to fill-in in the emergency room.

Mazza hid his multi-million-dollar salary from the public and went on medical leave in 2011 before he was fired by the Liberal government.
