Toronto is under a heat alert as the mercury is expected to climb to a high of 32 C on Sunday. But with the humidity it will feel closer to 40.

"Today and Monday are expected to be hot and humid," Environment Canada said in a statement. "Daytime high temperatures are expected to be the low 30s with the maximum humidex values near 40."

According to Toronto's medical officer of health, Dr. David McKeown, the extreme heat can be dangerous for those with chronic illnesses, the elderly, and young children.

"During a heat alert, the public is encouraged to call or visit family, friends and neighbours, especially isolated adults and seniors who are at greater risk of suffering from heat-related illness, to make sure they are cool and drinking plenty of fluids," a statement from the City of Toronto said Sunday.

The city is also advising residents to re-schedule outdoor activities and to visit air-conditioned places, such as malls and libraries, to stay cool.

The blanket of heat is expected to hover over the GTA until at least Monday, when there's a 30 per cent chance of showers in the evening, Environment Canada says.
