A small dog was seriously injured in Mississauga after two large cane corso dogs pounced on the Chihuahua-Pomeranian mix.

The owner was walking the dog on Greenbelt Cres. Saturday afternoon when two large dogs escaped from a nearby backyard through open gates.

Police were called just after 2:30 p.m. after neighbours heard screams in the area.

The woman was bitten on the hand in the scuffle, but her injuries were minor.

Neighbours say they saw one of the big dogs gripping the small dog in its mouth.

“I grabbed a planter that he had and struck the dog on the head with it and it was heavy and shattered it, and when that happened the dog dropped the little dog,” said neighbour Jim Rathgeber.

Neighbours they say eventually managed to get the dogs back into their backyard.

Police haven’t laid any charges and say Animal Services will be investigating the attack.

The owner of the small dog is waiting to hear whether her pet will survive.
