A controversial gas generating station that was halted amid the political pressure of Ontario's last provincial election could be destined for a home only kilometres from its original location.

Greenfield South Power is in the planning stages of moving construction to Brampton, CTVToronto.ca has learned.

The plant was originally under construction on the border between Mississauga and the western edge of Toronto when, during last year's provincial election, Premier Dalton McGuinty halted construction.

Construction of the unpopular plant slowly came to an end and the Liberals said they would determine a new course of action in the near future.

Gordon Smith, the manager of media communications for the City of Brampton, confirmed that Greenfield met with the city to discuss submitting a development and rezoning application.

Smith said Greenfield was considering a location on the north side of Intermodal Drive, east of Goreway Drive, on the northeast section of town and next to the Claireville Conservation Area.

Smith said the meeting was a "pre-application consultation" and that the company appeared to be considering other locations. No formal application had been submitted, he said.

The plant was originally set to be located in Mississauga at 2315 Loreland Ave., near Sherway Gardens, about 20 kilometres south of the Brampton location.

The plant's original cancellation has caused headaches for the province. Earlier this month, Ontario Power Generation and the government were hit with a $300-million lawsuit for allegedly breaching contracts in relation to the cancelled project.

Energy Minister Chris Bentley said he would oppose the lawsuit from EIG Management, the American financing company behind the Mississauga plant, and said they were still working with the company to find a new location for the plant.

A two-storey transformer was also delivered to the former construction site two months after the project was cancelled. A Ministry of Energy spokeswoman said the electrical transformer would only be stored on the site.

The Conservatives and NDP have claimed that the Liberals cancelled the gas plant to save government seats in the election.

Calls to Greenfield South Power were not returned.
