In a unanimous vote, city councillors have decided to hold a by-election in order to fill the Ward 2 – Etobicoke North – council seat formerly held by the late Rob Ford.

The by-election is set to be held on July 25 and those who are interested in running will have until June 10 to register as candidates.

Immediately following the decision, Michael Ford released a statement announcing he has resigned from his position with the Toronto District School Board and will run in the Ward 2 by-election.

“I am very grateful to call Etobicoke my home. I was born in Ward 2, I grew up here and I hope to serve the hard working residents of North Etobicoke for many years to come,” Ford said in his statement.

“Three generations of the Ford family have served our community. I want to build on this legacy of public service, and that means showing up at your door when you need assistance,” Ford continued.

In the statement, Ford said he wants to create jobs and “support investments in public transit.”

“My message to ward 2 is simple: together, we can accomplish great things for our community,” Ford said. “I will work around the clock to bring jobs and economic development to our area. I will be a strong voice for taxpayers and fight to make our city more affordable. I will support investments in public transit and push for sustainable programs that help our communities thrive.”

Last week, Michael and Doug Ford said they were deciding which of the two of them would run if a by-election was called.

Doug Ford is a former city councillor and ran for mayor in 2014. Michael Ford, 21, is a public schoolboard trustee and the son of Rob and Doug’s sister Kathy.

At this point, Michael Ford is the only person to declare his intention to run in the by-election.

Michael Ford previously ran for election in Ward 2 but ended his campaign when Rob Ford was diagnosed with cancer.

Rob Ford passed away on March 22 after a battle with a rare form of cancer called lipsosarcoma.

Prior to being elected mayor, Rob Ford was the city councillor for Ward 2 between 2000 and 2010, and again in 2014.

"Michael believes in saving taxpayers money, he believes in subways, he believes in customer service," Doug Ford said Wednesday. "Michael's a little softer than Rob and I, but he still stands for platform."

Though Michael Ford has not yet filed the appropriate paperwork to run in the Ward 2 by-election, a website promoting his campaign has already surfaced online.
