Four people -- including a baby -- had to be rescued by emergency crews after a scaffolding collapsed on Eglinton Avenue West in Forest Hill Monday afternoon.
Toronto Paramedic Services said one person was taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Another patient on the scene is being taken to a trauma centre.
In total, seven people were taken to hospital with injuries.A police search and rescue dog was on the scene to help officials track down anyone else who may have been trapped but after several searches, no other victims were found.
The structure collapsed just before 2:30 p.m. A wide pile of debris, concrete bricks, metal and wood spilled onto the sidewalk and the roadway.
The area is now closed to traffic.
The collapse happened at the site of a building that was being demolished. It is believed the building used to be occupied by the House of Chan restaurant.
The site is part of a larger construction project involving the future Forest Hill Crosstown LRT station, Metrolinx spokesperson Anne Marie Aikins confirmed to CTV Toronto.
One woman who was near the scene told CP24 she heard a crash that was "the worst sound I ever heard."
She said she was too scared to go to the scene to find out what happened.
Another witness told CP24 she saw a young couple and a baby sitting at the back of an ambulance. The man's hand was injured, she said.
The family was just passing by when then structure tumbled down. The baby's stroller was "mangled" but the baby miraculously was not injured, Cons. Allyson Douglas-Cook told reporters at the scene. Douglas-Cook said officials believe that the stroller likely saved the child's life.
The Ministry of Labour is leading the investigation into what led to the collapse.
