Police suspect a lethal cocktail of alcohol and speed are behind a serious crash in North York.

A car crashed into a pole at about 1:20 a.m. Monday morning, injuring the driver and his passenger. The 27-year-old driver is at hospital in critical condition with severe head injuries. His 24-year-old passenger escaped with minor wounds.

Police say a white BMW was travelling northbound on Bathurst Street in the curb lane, going well in excess of the speed limit. The driver lost control of the car and mounted the east curb, striking a concrete poll.

The accident closed off Bathurst Street, just south of Steeles Avenue, for hours as they investigated the scene. The area was set to reopen before 8:30 a.m.
