The Toronto area saw a surge of Liberal support during this election. Here's a look at the results in some of the GTA's most contested ridings:

Spadina-Fort York

Winner: Adam Vaughan (Liberal)

Other candidates:
Conservative: Sabrina Zuniga
NDP: Olivia Chow
Green: Sharon Danley

Spadina-Fork York was one of Toronto’s new ridings for this election. This riding was expected to be one of the closest races in the GTA between the NDP’s Olivia Chow and Liberal incumbent Adam Vaughan, but Vaughan ended up winning 55.7 per cent of the vote while Chow only got 24.6 per cent for in an unexpected landslide victory.

Etobicoke Centre

Winner: Borys Wrzesnewskyj (Liberal)

Other candidates:
Conservative: Ted Opitz (I)
NDP: Tanya De Mello
Green: Shawn Rizvi

Located on the Western edge of the city, Etobicoke Centre has switched hands again from the Conservative MP Ted Optiz to Liberal Borys Wrzesnewskyj who was elected by more than 7,000 votes. Wrzesnewskyj also represented Etobicoke Centre between 2004 and 2011.

Winner: James Maloney (Liberal)

Other candidates:
Conservative: Bernard Trottier (I)
NDP: Phil Trotter
Green: Angela Salewsky

Liberal James Maloney has defeated Conservative incumbent Bernard Trottier in the Etobicoke Lakeshore riding. In May the Liberals had to scramble to find a new MP to compete in the Conservative stronghold after Susan Watt resigned the nomination.

Scarborough Southwest

Winner: Bill Blair (Liberal)

Other Candidates:
Conservative: Roshan Nallaratnam
NDP: Dan Harris (I)
Green: Tommy Taylor

Scarborough Southwest is one of the six ridings in Scarborough where former Toronto police chief Bill Blair has overtaken NDP incumbent Dan Harris. Blair retired in early April after spending 10 years as Toronto’s top cop. Shortly after he retired, Blair announced he would be throwing his hat into the political race.

Winner: Marco Mendicino (Liberal)

Other candidates:
Conservative: Joe Oliver (I)
Green: Matthew Chisholm
NDP: Andrew Thomson

Former Conservative finance minister Joe Oliver has been defeated by Liberal Marco Medicino in this hotly-contested riding. Before the 2011 election, this riding was dominated by the Liberal Party, dating back to the 1980s.

Winner: Francesco Sorbara (Liberal)

Other candidates:
Conservative: Julian Fantino (I)\
NDP: Adriana Marie Zichy
Green: Elise Boulanger

In perhaps one of the biggest upsets of the election, Liberal Francesco Sorbara has overtaken Conservative MP and former Minister of Veterans Affairs Julian Fantino. This riding was one of the most important seats in the GTA that Conservatives hoped to hold in this election.
