Thirty people have been arrested in Ajax after police targeted areas around high schools and plazas for drugs.

Police initiated their operation, dubbed "Montana" back in March after receiving several complaints from the public.

After a two-week enforcement blitz, members of the Ajax/Pickering Community Resource Unit were able to lay charges of drug possession, drug trafficking and breaching bail conditions.

In total 18 charges were laid and 30 people were arrested. Police seized $3,000 worth of drugs plus a prohibited weapon.

"The majority of the arrests were initiated in local parks and plazas in close proximity to the schools for possession of marihuana," a Durham Regional Police news release says. "In some instances students were cautioned or issued a trespass notice in lieu of criminal charges."

Durham police said this won't be the last targeted campaign in the area.

They are also asking the public to call police if they suspect drug deals are going on in the neighbourhood.
