Three tornadoes touched down in south-central Ontario Wednesday during a bout of severe weather, Environment Canada has confirmed.

Thunderstorms developed late Wednesday from the Arthur area to Orillia to north of Minden and tracked eastward toward Haliburton and parts of eastern Ontario.

Storm surveyors investigating the weather systems Thursday found evidence that tornadoes, funnel clouds and waterspouts occurred in different areas, the national weather agency said in a statement released Thursday.

Eyewitness accounts and photographic evidence confirmed tornadoes in Arthur-Grand Valley, the Orillia area, and in the Carnarvon area, located north of Minden.

Investigators also confirmed a waterspout over Head Lake in the Northern Kawartha Lakes area Wednesday afternoon. Environment Canada said it appears the waterspout did not come ashore.

The tornadoes did not cause any significant damage.

Wednesday’s active weather brings the total amount of tornadoes this season in Ontario to 14.

The province records on average 12 tornadoes each year.
