A second body has been recovered from the wreckage of a tractor-trailer that crashed into a river near Cambridge, Ont., after veering off the busy Highway 401 earlier Tuesday.

The tractor-trailer left the eastbound lanes of Highway 401 around 11:40 a.m., ending up in the Nith River, just west of Cambridge.

An OPP dive team were called in to begin recovery efforts, as well as a cleanup crew to tend to a diesel spill.

Initially officers said they did not know how many people were in the tractor-trailer, however the CEO of the U.S.-based trucking company, Philip Belyew Sr., told CTV News there were two drivers on board.

Earlier Tuesday evening, the first body was pulled from the wreckage.

Witness Bill Danylchuk told CTV Toronto he was driving near the truck when it crashed.

“I looked off my right-hand side and the truck that was there in front of me was gone,” he said.

The truck was bringing computer parts from Chicago to Mississauga and was loaded with 20,000 pounds of computer equipment.

Photos from the scene showed the partially submerged body of the truck and computer parts floating in the river.

All eastbound lanes on Highway 401 are closed near Highway 2 as the investigation continues, and are expected to remain closed for several hours.

A traffic reconstruction team is at the scene to look into what may have caused the crash.
