A nine-year-old child and an adult male are dead, and four others in hospital after a crash north of Toronto on Sunday.
York Regional Police received the call for a multiple-vehicle collision near Kirby Road and Kipling Avenue in Vaughan shortly after 4 p.m. on Sunday.
A 65-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Three children and one adult were transported to a Toronto trauma centre in life-threatening condition. Another person was also taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
One child, who police say was nine years old, was pronounced dead in hospital.
Two other children remained in hospital Sunday night in life-threatening condition. The two adults in hospital have been listed in serious but stable condition.
A 29-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of impaired driving but has not been formally charged. Police say the man will appear in a Newmarket court on Monday morning.
Speaking to reporters on Sunday night, Const. Andy Pattenden called this collision “truly the worst-case scenario.”
“It’s going to take a long time to piece together exactly what happened,” Pattenden said.
The intersection was closed for several hours while police investigated but was in the process of reopening overnight Sunday.
