Police have identified a vehicle of interest in connection with a Pickering hit and run that left a teen in critical condition Tuesday.

Durham Regional Police said a young man and a friend were looking for a taxi around 3 a.m. when he stepped off the curb to flag down what he thought was a cab.

The suspect vehicle struck the 18-year-old pedestrian hard, but failed to remain at the scene. It was last seen travelling northbound on Liverpool Road.

The victim, who is not from Durham Region, suffered life-threatening injuries. He was taken for treatment at a local hospital before being transferred to Toronto's Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto, where police said he remains in critical condition.

Liverpool Road has since reopened after police gathered evidence this morning, and officers are canvassing the neighbourhood hoping to gain more information about the suspect driver and vehicle.

There have been no arrests at this time, but police have identified a vehicle of interest.

Body shop owners in the GTA were asked to be on the lookout Tuesday for any vehicles with front-end or windshield damage.

Anyone information about the investigation is asked to contact D/Cst. Al McDonald of the DRPS Traffic Services Branch at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5213. Anonymous tips can also be left with Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
