ORILLIA, Ont. - Ontario provincial police say 16 people died on roads, trails and waterways patrolled by the force over the Canada Day long weekend.

Police say 12 people died in highway collisions, two on the water and two in crashes involving all-terrain vehicles.

Three of those who died in highway crashes were not wearing seatbelts, and two drowning victims were not wearing life-jackets.

Police say four fatal collisions involved alcohol and three were the result of driving too fast.

Officers laid a total of 7,122 charges -- speeding offences accounted for 4,318 of them, including 80 for street racing.

Some 91 drivers were charged with driving over the legal blood-alcohol level.
