A capybara who has been eluding capture for more than a month has finally been caught by High Park zoo officials.

The Toronto parks services posted a photo of the rodent on Twitter and wrote, “Welcome home” around 10:20 a.m.

The capybara made headlines for escaping from its enclosure at High Park on May 25 along with a second capybara. The two – dubbed ‘Bonnie and Clyde’ -- escaped as zoo officials were putting in a third capybara into the pend.

The search for the escapees captured the attention of the city, sparking memes on social media and even inspiring a Twitter account.

The animals were spotted multiple times in the park by the public, but their skittish nature made it difficult for zoo officials to capture them.

After weeks of searching and baiting, one of the capybaras was located and captured with a non-lethal trap on June 12.

Details were not given on how the second capybara was caught but officials have long said they don’t believe the rodents ever left the park.

Megan Price, the policy and project advisor for Toronto’s parks department, told CTV News Toronto that a veterinarian would be giving the Capybara a health checkup Tuesday afternoon.

She said the animal would be kept inside and away from the public until Thursday “at the earliest.” The three capybaras will remain in separate pens, Price said, until they can become comfortable with each other in captivity.
