A woman who died Thursday morning while cycling in a Milton conservation area worked as a firefighter.
Sara Rosen, 38, worked at Toronto Fire Station 443 in north Etobicoke, near Islington and Eglinton Avenues, according to the Toronto Professional Firefighters’ Union.
Rosen was cycling with another person in the Kelso Conservation Area, just south of Glen Eden Ski Resort, when she stumbled and fell more than 20 metres (70 feet) off the side of a cliff.
Halton Regional Police and other emergency crews rushed to the scene at around 10:30 a.m. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Sgt. Barry Malciw said police and firefighters brought in special equipment to remove the body from the area.
"Right now the body is in a densely wooded area and we expect extraction will take some time," Malciw said Thursday afternoon.
The TPFU sent out a note to media late Thursday afternoon, expressing their sadness at the loss of their colleague.
“It is with profound sadness that we learned of the tragic accident to one of our own Sara,” the statement said. “Sara had 15 years of service with Toronto Fire and was a truly proud member of Local 3888. Sara is a member of our Local 3888 Constitution Committee, a frequent attendee at our Union Meetings and helped with many of our Charity/PR events. Sarah is also City of Toronto Positive Space Ambassador.”
The union said Rosen donated a kidney to her brother 12 years ago and since then has been an advocate for organ donation.
In the meantime, Conservation Halton tweeted that all trails and access to the Kelso Summit in the Kelso Conservation Area will be closed for the day.
