Ontario Provincial Police are investigating why a woman and her child apparently jumped out of a vehicle early Thursday morning onto Highway 410, leaving them both injured.

OPP said the pair "exited" the white Kia sedan just before 10 a.m.

"We had a vehicle travelling southbound on (Highway) 410. It was involved in a single-vehicle collision. As a result two people have been taken to hospital," OPP acting Staff Sgt. Carlos Goncalves told reporters

However, sources told CTV Toronto the woman jumped out of the moving car as she held her child and that both were passengers inside the Kia. The only other person in the car, according to sources, was a female driver who is now co-operating with police.

Peel Emergency Medical Service said the 30-year-old woman, who suffered scrapes on her arms, legs and body, along with her three-year-old daughter were transported to Brampton Civic Hospital.

Police said the child has since been transferred to the Hospital for Sick Children. The extent of the three-year-old injuries is not known.

The highway south of Williams Parkway was closed as police investigated the incident but has since been reopened.

The focus of the investigation will be whether the woman was trying to escape a dangerous situation or whether she simply jumped from the vehicle.

Police said no charges have been laid.
