The family of a18-year-old Toronto woman struck and killed by an alleged impaired driver at Western University says they are “heartbroken” by the loss.
Andrea Christidis, 18, died after being struck in the area of Lambton and University Drives at Western University in London around 11:35 p.m. on Wednesday.
“Words cannot possibly explain the tragedy that has been thrust upon us,” Christidis’ uncle, Meni Rizakos told reporters.
“We are heartbroken, we’re devastated.”
Police say a northbound car on Lambton Drive lost control, jumped the curb and struck Christidis, who was walking home from a study lab at the time.
Christidis suffered life-threatening injuries and was pronounced dead in hospital on Friday.
“Andrea was a kind, compassionate and loving human being,” Rizakos said. “She was deeply loved, as reflected by the outpouring of condolences, sympathies and prayers from all those that she touched.”
“Her beautiful smile, kind soul and infectious spirit will be missed,” he added.
Christidis recently graduated from Leaside High School in Toronto with an honours diploma in both French and English, and had aspirations of a career in the medical field.
“This is a terrible tragedy and Andrea’s death saddens me deeply,” university President Amit Chakma said in a statement last week. “I know that I speak for the entire Western community when I say that my heart goes out to her family and friends at this most difficult time.”
Jared DeJong, 24, of London, was taken into custody at the scene and appeared in court on Thursday.
DeJong has been charged with dangerous driving causing bodily harm and impaired driving.
DeJong was released from custody after posting $1,500 bail and is subject to several conditions including a driving ban and not to consume alcohol.
His next court appearance is on Nov. 3.
A visitation and funeral for Christidis are scheduled for next week.
