Two women have been airlifted to hospital with critical injuries after their vehicle lost control and collided head-on with a tractor-trailer on Highway 401 near Mississauga Sunday morning.

It happened in the eastbound lanes of the highway at Mississauga Road at around 7:45 a.m.

Both victims were passengers in the vehicle and had to be extricated by emergency crews.

The male driver of the vehicle suffered minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital.

The accident happened in the wake of a major winter storm, but OPP Const. Dave Woodford speculated that the slippery road conditions are only partly to blame in an interview with CP24.

“Why do these vehicles spin out? It can’t be the weather and the road conditions when you are seeing hundreds of thousands of vehicles passing through OK,” he told CP24 at the scene. “That tells me it is the individual that is not driving to the conditions or doing something wrong that caused them to lose control and then you sort of have a chain reaction collision.”

The eastbound lanes of the highway were closed at Mississauga Road, but reopened at around 11:45 a.m.
