The Toronto Transit Commission has launched an investigation after a dashboard camera caught a bus running a red light and nearly hitting a pedestrian.
In the video, which was uploaded to YouTube, a bus is seen driving along a Toronto road during the daytime. As it approaches the intersection at the 15 second mark of the video, the traffic light turns red.
A car in the middle lane stops for the light, but the bus appears to accelerate. At the same time, a pedestrian on the other side of the road begins to cross the street directly into the path of the oncoming bus, which is forced to swerve to the middle lane to avoid hitting her.
A person in the car with the dashcam can be heard saying that he "thought she was going to die."
According to the poster, the video was recorded on Monday, although its timestamp says 2012.
TTC spokesperson Brad Ross says he was made aware of the incident earlier on Tuesday. He says it happened on Monday at approximately 9:15 a.m. at the intersection of Eglinton Avenue East and Ionview Road. He says they are in the process of identifying the driver.
Ross says he cannot comment on how the driver will be punished, but says the termination of employment is the "severest form of consequence."
