The driver of a TTC bus that fatally struck a teenage girl in Scarborough in December is facing charges in connection with the incident.

Amaria Diljohn, 14, was attempting to cross Neilson Road near Finch Avenue East when she was hit by the 133 bus on Friday, Dec. 19. At her funeral, the Grade 9 student was described as kind and loving.

Police said the driver, 28-year-old Dhanbir Shergill of Bowmanville, turned himself in on Friday morning.

Shergill has been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death and failure to stop at the scene of an accident. He appeared in a Scarborough court on Friday afternoon.

TTC spokesperson Brad Ross did not comment when asked about the charges, saying questions should be directed to police. The transit commission confirmed to CTV Toronto's Ashley Rowe that Shergill is no longer employed by the TTC.

The Amalgamated Transit Union Local 113, which represents TTC bus drivers, released a statement on Friday, saying the union would not comment on the charges.

"Amaria's death was a great tragedy that affected us all," President of ATU Local 113 Bob Kinnear said. "We cannot bring her back but her grieving family deserves to know what happened."
