A Hamilton woman is dead after she was struck by a tractor-trailer in Hamilton early Friday morning, provincial police said.

Ontario Provincial police say the 54-year-old pedestrian was struck on Highway 6 near Chippewa Road in the Mount Hope community of Hamilton at approximately 4 a.m.

She was hit by a truck carrying a load of refrigerated liquid nitrogen, police said in a statement issued Friday afternoon.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

The highway remained closed from Chippewa Road to Upper James Street for approximately four hours after the collision, as police examined the scene.

The 55-year-old driver, was questioned by police, and no charges have been laid. Investigators said they are still looking into the actions of the pedestrian up to and including the moment of the collision.
