A 72-year-old Toronto woman has been arrested after a firefighter was seriously injured while working to extinguish a fire in the Little Portugal neighbourhood in October.

The incident occurred on Oct. 11, when a fire broke out at an unlicensed rooming house in the Dufferin Street and Alma Avenue area.

Toronto Fire Services arrived on the scene and a firefighter was seriously injured, police said.

An investigation by the Office of the Fire Marshall and other officials revealed that there were a number of violations of the Ontario Fire Code.

The property owner was previously charged and convicted for similar violations on Aug. 14, 2015, Toronto Fire Division Chief Larry Cocco told CP24 on Wednesday. Similar violations were noted this October, which contributed to the spread of the fire, he said.

Cocco could not explain why the property owner was still operating the rooming house.

The firefighter is recovering after suffering from burns and has been released from hospital.

Celia Gilda Gomez was arrested on Oct. 25 and charged with two counts of arson by negligence, criminal negligence causing bodily harm, mischief under $5,000 and mischief endangering a life.

She is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 29.
