A young man who died of a stab wound over the weekend after trying to break up a fight in Etobicoke has been identified.

Police said Tenzin Tseten, 22, had been celebrating Tibetan Buddhist New Year at the Tibetan Cultural Centre at 40 Titan Rd., just north of Kipling Avenue and the Queensway.

A fight between two males broke out in the parking lot at approximately 3:20 a.m. on Sunday, Toronto homicide Det. Sgt. Pauline Gray said at a news conference on Tuesday.

Gray said she believes Tseten was one of several males who attempted to break up the fight.

"Within the melee, a knife was brandished and two men were stabbed," Gray said.

One male was transported to a nearby hospital, and was swiftly released. Tseten, the other stabbing victim, was transported to St. Michael's Hospital on an emergency run. He had been stabbed in the chest and succumbed to his injuries.

It is not known if the same person stabbed both victims.

The suspect was described as a male who "appears Tibetan." He is between the ages of 17 and 20, with dark, short hair.

The victim's family and Toronto police asked those who were there that night to contact police at 416-808-7100 if they have any information.

Gray said there were 30 to 40 people in the building and the surrounding area where the fight occurred.

Despite the number of people that were around, Gray said she hasn't spoken to very many witnesses. She said she suspects few people have come forward because they were unaware of what happened.

They may be aware of the fight, but not aware that it turned into a homicide, she said.

Police have gathered security video from businesses in the area and will be reviewing the tapes for further clues.
