A Toronto man has been arrested after Port Hope police unearthed a massive marijuana grow-operation worth about $1.7 million inside an old factory in the heart of the small community.

Police seized at least 1,700 marijuana plants Monday from inside the building, an abandoned file factory on Cavan Street located just north of Port Hope’s downtown core.

Police said called the grow-up a very “sophisticated” operation, complete with infrared security cameras, factory lights and timed watering equipment set up to care for the plants.

A 24-year-old Toronto man is facing charges of production of marijuana and possession with the purpose of trafficking.

He has been released on bail on a promise to appear in court in January 2013.

Port Hope is located about an hour's drive east of Toronto.
