A thick fog is reducing visibility in the Greater Toronto Area, as a heavy air mass lingers over most of southern Ontario.

A fog advisory was issued for the city shortly after 3:30 p.m.

"Visibility may be significantly and suddenly reduced to near zero," Environment Canada said in a statement on Tuesday. "Travel is expected to be hazardous due to reduced visibility in some locations."

Tuesday’s advisory comes after another one was issued a day earlier.

By Tuesday morning, the shroud had not yet lifted, prompting police to warn drivers to slow down.

"We have a number of collision calls where fog may have been a factor; slow down and drive at a speed that suits the conditions," police posted on Twitter.

Staff at Toronto's Pearson International Airport also warned that the fog was affecting flights, and advised travellers to check status online before leaving home.

The fog advisory was eventually lifted, but the weather agency has since issued another for the city.

Fog advisories have also been issued for a number of other areas, including:

  • Halton-Peel
  • York-Durham
  • Hamilton
  • Haliburton
  • Grey-Bruce
  • Peterborough-Kawartha Lakes
