Toronto police have charged a man with first-degree murder in connection with a downtown hit-and-run that left a man dead earlier this month.

Steven Doyle, 27, was pronounced dead at the scene after being struck by a vehicle on the sidewalk at Gerrard and George streets at around 5:45 p.m. on Aug. 15.

Investigators have said that they believe Doyle, a father known in the Regent Park neighbourhood as “Steve-O,” was intentionally struck by the driver of a blue Dodge Caravan that fled the scene.

The vehicle was found a short time later, but the driver had fled on foot.

Surveillance footage released by police in the days after the collision showed a suspect wiping down the driver’s area of the suspect vehicle with a jacket before abandoning it. Police said they believe the man was trying to make sure that there was no physical evidence left on the van.

While a witness told CP24 that Doyle was run down following a dispute over drugs, police have said they cannot confirm what led to the incident.

Police said Wednesday that a suspect has been arrested in connection with the incident, which is being investigated as a homicide.

Ayubullo Mohammad-Duad, 21, of no fixed address, has been charged with first-degree murder.

He was scheduled to make a court appearance Wednesday.
