An Ontario animal shelter has located the owner of an emaciated dog that was reported as a stray thanks to an "immediate response" from social media and more than two dozen tips.

The French Mastiff cross-breed, named Minnie, was found in St. Catharines Wednesday evening.

"We provided her with immediate medical attention," the executive director of the Lincoln County Humane Society Kevin Strooband said in a statement Thursday morning. "She is a very friendly dog and we hope to learn more about her past, in the coming days."

The animal shelter said it was also looking for the owner of the dog.

Hours after Thursday's statement was released, the Lincoln County shelter said it had located the owner.

"Due to almost immediate response from social media and over 25 tips received by the LCHS, the owner of the French Mastiff cross-breed has been identified," the shelter said in a statement Thursday afternoon.

The shelter said Minnie, which recently nursed puppies, has been surrendered to LCHS staff and they are working to bring it back to full health.
