The province’s Special Investigations Unit says a Toronto police officer has been charged in relation to the death of a suicidal teen in February.

The SIU said that around 2 p.m. on Feb. 2, 2016, a man called for police assistance following a suicide attempt by a 19-year-old in the city’s High Park.

According to investigators, the teen was pronounced dead at around 3:30 p.m. later that afternoon.

The SIU has not released any further details about the circumstances surrounding the incident inside the park. In a news release issued Thursday, the SIU also stated it would not comment any further on the investigation while the incident is before the court.

Const. Kyle Upjohn has been charged with criminal negligence causing death and failing to provide the necessaries of life.

He is expected make an appearance before the Ontario Court of Justice on August 4.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
