Police say a 31-year-old Mississauga man, who was gunned down inside a busy Chinatown restaurant earlier this month, was killed during a fight with a group of suspects who had stolen his friend's gold chains.

Tariq Mohammed was shot at close range inside Garden Restaurant -- located in the Dundas Street West and Chestnut Street area -- in the early hours of Nov. 16.

Police previously said Mohammed was shot numerous times at approximately 4 a.m., and pronounced dead at the scene. Two female bystanders were also shot. They suffered serious, but non-life threatening injuries.

Police revealed new details Monday about the dramatic shooting. Sgt. Gary Giroux said two “violent altercations” broke out inside the restaurant prior to the shooting.

Mohammed and a group of his friends had arrived at the restaurant after partying at Muzik Nightclub, located on the Canadian National Exhibition grounds.

Giroux said after being served, Mohammed and a male friend -- who was wearing a significant amount of expensive jewelry -- went to the restroom. While they were inside, police say as many as five suspects entered the restaurant. Three of them were seen loitering in the restroom area.

Police say Mohammed’s friend was attacked when he exited the restroom by the suspects, two of whom were armed with firearms. Two of his gold chains, valued between $2,000 and $3,000, were yanked off his neck.

"The possibility is that he could very well been targeted based on the fact that the chains were very apparent and looked expensive," Giroux told reporters.

Police say Mohammed and his friend were able to break free from the suspects, but seconds later, another fight broke out near the restaurant’s takeout counter.

"What I suspect…is that they were certainly angry by the fact that they had been robbed," Giroux said.

Police say numerous shots rang out and patrons ducked underneath the tables. There were approximately 60 people inside the restaurant at the time.

Mohammed was shot multiple times, and two female bystanders were hit by stray bullets.

Police previously said they are searching for two male suspects, who were last seen running southbound on Chestnut Street.

The first suspect, who police believe is the shooter, is described as black and between 20- to 30-years-old. He has a lanky build, and is between 5'10 and 5'11 tall.

The second suspect is also described as black and between 20- to 30-years-old, but is shorter, with a stocky build. He was last seen with cornrows, and wearing a dark hoodie with a logo on the front.

Police say they are hoping to release security surveillance footage in the coming days.
