Toronto police are asking witnesses to come forward after a father of two was fatally shot outside his Rexdale townhouse on Monday night.
Officers were called to a home on Jamestown Crescent, near Kipling Avenue and Albion Road, when gunshots were heard at approximately 11 p.m.
When they arrived, officers found a man lying on the ground without vital signs. Police tried to resuscitate him before he was transported to hospital, but the man succumbed to his injuries.
The man was later identified as Donald Beckles, 46, a stay-at-home father with two children.
"He's a good kid," his mother told reporters on scene Tuesday afternoon. She said he was religious and often took their children to Sunday school.
"He's a good man. He loves his family and he loves people."
Toronto Police Det. Murray Barnes said Beckles was hearing impaired, and may not have heard the shooter or shooters approach.
"Mr. Beckles was simply having a smoke while his wife and children were asleep in bed," Barnes told media.
Police said that they believe the shooting was targeted. They are looking for two men seen fleeing the scene in a black vehicle.
They're asking for anyone with information to contact the homicide squad.
Officers will be canvassing the area through the day, hoping people will come forward with details.
