Remembrance Day has taken on added meaning after last month’s killings of Cpl. Nathan Cirillo, shot dead at the National War Memorial in Ottawa, and Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent, run over in Quebec by a man the government linked to terrorist ideology.

The Royal Canadian Legion, which hands out plastic poppies to honour fallen soldiers, confirmed last week that it had already distributed a million more flowers than 2013’s total.

Remembrance Day ceremonies this year, therefore, may draw larger-than-normal crowds.
