Peel Regional Police are warning the public to beware of snow removal scams and questionable practices as the temperatures drop.
In a statement issued Friday, police said customers often report been misled in the winter months, but police have a limited ability to assist in civil disputes.
The statement reminded those planning to hire a snow removal company to follow nine tips:
- Beware of cheap, cash-only deals.
- Use a company referred to you by a family member or friend.
- Be wary of door-to-door sales.
- Be warned all contracts can be cancelled within 10 days of receiving a written copy of the contract, regardless of reason.
- Know that as long as work has not begun, agreements can be cancelled within 30 days of the start date.
- Get estimates in writing.
- Don't sign contracts or pay on the spot. Take time to consider an offer.
- Research the company and ask for references.
- Don't do business with companies that won't provide a name, street address and phone number.
