Peel Regional Police are warning the public to beware of snow removal scams and questionable practices as the temperatures drop.

In a statement issued Friday, police said customers often report been misled in the winter months, but police have a limited ability to assist in civil disputes.

The statement reminded those planning to hire a snow removal company to follow nine tips:

  1. Beware of cheap, cash-only deals.
  2. Use a company referred to you by a family member or friend.
  3. Be wary of door-to-door sales.
  4. Be warned all contracts can be cancelled within 10 days of receiving a written copy of the contract, regardless of reason.
  5. Know that as long as work has not begun, agreements can be cancelled within 30 days of the start date.
  6. Get estimates in writing.
  7. Don't sign contracts or pay on the spot. Take time to consider an offer.
  8. Research the company and ask for references.
  9. Don't do business with companies that won't provide a name, street address and phone number.
