Police have identified a 22-year-old man who was found dead in an apartment building in Weston on Saturday.

Officers say the body of Toronto resident Kareem Hastings was found in a stairwell of the building at 2089 Lawrence Avenue West, near Weston Road at around 2:50 p.m.

A tenant of the building, who did not want to be identified, told CTV News Toronto that she heard shots ring out around 11:35 p.m. on Friday night.

“I heard bang, bang. I checked through my door hole. Then I didn’t hear anything,” she said. She decided to alert her superintendent and assumed someone had dialed 911.

On Saturday, around 15 hours after she heard the shots, she was trying to go down the stairwell but the door wouldn’t open.

“The body was there that's why I wasn't able to push further. I got that much open. I was really pushing hard. That's when I saw the head,” she said.

The superintendent later told CTV News Toronto that most tenants use the elevator and no one reported seeing the body until around 2:45 p.m. on Saturday -- 15 hours after the shots were heard.

A post-mortem exam was conducted today, confirming that the cause of death was gunshot wounds.

Investigators are canvassing the building in an effort to find any neighbours who may have known the victim or heard gunshots. They said they would also like to speak with any of Hastings’ friends or associates to determine his movements Friday evening.

No suspect information has been released at this time.
