A pharmacist and seven others are facing nearly 30 charges following a drug bust in York region.

Police began investigating the Keswick Pharmacy, located at 130 The Queensway South in Keswick, Ont., which is roughly 25 kilometres north of Newmarket, Ont. in November.

They had received a tip that alleged the pharmacy’s owner and pharmacist was selling narcotics to people without prescriptions. The suspected narcotics sold included fentanyl and oxycoden neo.

Eight people from Georgina and Vaughan are now facing several drug-related charges including Conspiracy to Commit an Indictable Offence, Trafficking a Narcotic, Unsafe Storage of a Firearm and others.

According to York Regional Police, The College of Pharmacists has been updated regarding the circumstances surrounding the illegal trafficking of narcotics.

Fentanyl is an opiod-based pain killer that is roughly 100 times stronger than morphine. Police said that if recreational drug users manipulate a fentanyl patch and ingest, inject, or smoke a gel form of the drug then they should be aware that a fatal overdose could occur.
