If extended bar hours during the Olympic gold medal game wasn’t quite enough for some patrons, a new online petition is looking to extend last calls at local Toronto bars until 4 a.m.

The website LastCallTO is pushing Toronto city council to extend the sale of alcohol by two hours, from 2 a.m. to 4 a.m.

The site says the extra hours would improve the city’s nightlife, create jobs and offer an economic incentive to businesses looking to monopolize on the late-night crowd.

Supporters of the petition point to other major cities with 4 a.m. last calls such as New York and Berlin and note that extending the sale of alcohol in Toronto will boost the city’s international appeal.

“Our 2 a.m. last call for alcohol cuts our night short,” the website states.

“Our city should be a top global destination for immigration and tourism -- we have a diverse, multicultural population, a low crime rate and world-class restaurants, concert halls, nightclubs and bars.”

Currently, the City of Toronto only extends last calls during major city-wide events such as Nuit Blanche and the Toronto International Film Festival.

LastcallTO says extending the sale of alcohol past 2 a.m. would not only reduce late-night crowds and illegal after-hours venues but also relieve the strain placed on taxi and police services at night.

The grassroots campaign, which launched earlier this month, has been slowly gaining momentum online through social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter.

Many Toronto residents have expressed their approval of the proposal on Twitter.

The group notes that the city has the authority to extend the sale of liquor past 2 a.m. under Section 62.1 (1) of the Liquor Licence Act.

The website has organized an online petition in support of the extended hours, stating that it has received more than 1,000 signatures in less than two hours.

The group plans to present the petition to candidates running in the upcoming October election, hoping the discussion will become a hot-button issue during the campaign.
