One man was killed and another injured after an altercation between two groups led to a shooting at a busy Toronto shopping mall Saturday night.

Multiple shots were fired in the large parking lot outside Yorkdale Shopping Centre shortly after 8 p.m.

One male victim was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other was taken to hospital in serious, but stable condition.

Toronto police initially said that the second victim was female, but later corrected the statement.

“There were two groups of parties involved in an altercation that began inside the mall and carried on outside the mall,” Det. Rob North told reporters at a midnight news conference.

He said no shots were fired inside the mall and no bystanders were injured.

North said police may be looking for five or six suspects, but could not provide their descriptions. He said police were interviewing a number of witnesses and checking surveillance camera footage.

Officers were also stopping vehicles as they tried to leave the mall parking lot, taking down licence plate numbers and occupants’ personal information.  Because of the long lineups, some shoppers and movie-goers left their cars in the lot for the night and found other ways to get home.

North could not say whether the people involved in the shooting knew each other.

He appealed to anyone with information to contact police.
