One of three victims of a fiery crash near Toronto Pearson International Airport early Saturday morning has been identified on social media as rapper Shane Redway.
There has been an outpouring of support on social media for the 26-year-old Mississauga rapper. #RIPRedway has been trending in Toronto since news of the rapper's death spread.
Redway was reportedly one of three passengers who were killed after a car veered into the guardrail on the northbound Highway 427 ramp to the westbound Highway 401, around 4 a.m. Following the collision, the car caught on fire.
A man and a woman were pronounced dead at the scene. Another woman was pulled onto the road and was transported to hospital in life-threatening condition, but later died, according to police.
OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said bystanders pulled the female out of the burning car and performed CPR on her.
Police have not yet officially identified the victims, citing they need to perform autopsies on the victims.
It's still unclear what caused the fatal crash.
"We’ll be looking into everything (including) mechanical issues … fatigue, distraction, impairment," Schmidt told reporters on Saturday.
Witness Eric Quach was at the scene of the crash Saturday morning and tried to help but said "there was nothing we could do."
"I ran back to my car to grab something so I could break the window but by the time I came back the fire was just way too big," Quach said.
"The cops weren't there yet, the ambulance wasn’t there yet, the fire truck wasn’t there yet and we tried but there was just nothing we could do," Quach added.
Rich Kidd, a long-time friend of Redway says the unexpected death of the up-and-coming local rapper has left him heartbroken. He said he saw the 26-year-old just hours before the fatal crash.
“(His death) was a shocker,” Rich Kidd told CTV Toronto. “He was a joker, had a good spirit – plus he was dope on the mic.”
Redway's management group, CHAMP Management, released a statement following the musician's unexpected death.
"Redway was known for being a passionate artist who was always striving for greatness, pushing the boundaries of always believing in your visions and dreams."
The northbound Hwy. 427 ramp was temporarily closed as police continued their investigation.
