A memorial is being held Saturday for a young girl killed near her Leaside home while crossing the street two years ago.

Georgia Walsh was struck by a vehicle at Millwood Road and McRae Drive at around 4 p.m. on July 16, 2014.

She was taken to hospital with a serious head trauma, but was later pronounced dead.

To honour her love of baseball and the community, the second annual Georgia Walsh Memorial All-Star Game -- and a fun fair -- is being held at Trace Manes Park with support from her family and local residents.

Funds raised from the baseball game will go toward “creating a state-of-the-art playground,” at the park, according to a news release about the event.

The new park will be “fully fenced for the first time to ensure our children are safe,” the release said. The park will also be wheelchair accessible with a rubberized surface and special needs playground equipment.

The fair is expected to go on until around 3 p.m. and the baseball tournament until 4:30 p.m.

After the incident in 2014, the family released a statement saying Walsh was a “beautiful daughter and wonderful sister.” Walsh’s father was the president of the Conservative Party of Canada from 2009 until May 2016.

The driver, Ranko Stupar, who was 50 years old at the time, was charged with careless driving and failure to stop at a red light. He had to pay a $2,000 fine, was prohibited from driving for two years and was given two-years probation.

Before Walsh was killed, the neighbourhood had raised concerns about the busy intersection for months. Traffic in the area increased in 2014, when drivers would cut through the area to avoid construction along Eglinton Avenue, they said.
