A man was taken to hospital suffering a gunshot wound to his leg early Monday morning, after an incident outside the downtown Hilton Toronto hotel.

Toronto police were working in the nearby Queen Street West and York Street area when they were alerted by the sound of gunshots shortly after 5 a.m.

When police arrived at the hotel on Richmond Street West, east of University Avenue, three people fled the scene. After a short foot pursuit, the three were apprehended and taken to 51 Division. At least one loaded firearm was recovered from the scene.

The shooting victim was taken to St. Michael's hospital with a non-life threatening injury.

In the wake of recent gun violence in the city, last week Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair announced an increased police presence through the end of the September long weekend.

"Out intent is not to over-police our communities, our intent is to over protect them," Blair told reporters.

The extra patrols were launched over the weekend, as the city celebrated the annual Caribbean Carnival festivities.
