Just over three years after a hit-and-run claimed the life of a great-grandfather, the driver was sent to prison on Tuesday.

Daniel Rouleau was sentenced to three years behind bars for the death of Laurie Landry. He will also be banned from driving for 10 years.

On Dec. 29, 2003 Landry, who was 72 at the time, was struck by a car as he stepped off a bus not far from his home. Last September Rouleau, 55, pleaded guilty to impaired driving causing death.

During the sentencing, the Landry family was joined by members of the Rouleau family who offered their support.

Outside the courthouse, the grieving family spoke of their loss and the ordeal in court.

"In reality, he's trying to blame everybody else but himself thinking he didn't do anything wrong," grandson Jason Landry said of Rouleau. "'It's my grandfather's fault, it's the witnesses' fault, (but) he's the one that got into a vehicle and drank and drive."

The victim's granddaughter Ruth Patenaude spoke of about how the death affected her grandmother Elizabeth.

"It's been brutal on her," Patenaude said. "She cries every night and she's lonely every day. She lives with me and I try my best to make her feel comfortable."

Patenaude added that her grandmother finds it difficult "without her childhood sweetheart." The couple had celebrated their 45th anniversary before the accident.

Last Thursday, family members gave victim impact statements to the court. They described Landry as a loyal family man who always used sign language to tell them of his love.

Landry met his wife at a Halifax-based elementary school for the deaf when they were just children. Despite being deaf, they loved to dance, using the vibrations through the dance floor to pick up the musical cues.

The couple was reportedly inseparable, until the night he was killed.

Landry was returning from a Knights of Columbus bingo game, where he volunteered every week. His wife had chosen to stay home that evening.

Landry took a bus to get home that evening. As he stepped off the bus onto Bloor Street, he was struck by a pickup truck driven by Rouleau.

He was fatally battered by the impact while Rouleau sped away.
