TORONTO -- Approximately 250 people were stranded on a GO train Saturday night after a fatality on the tracks in Mississauga, Ont.

Metrolinx spokesperson Anne Marie Aikins says that, at about 10:45 p.m., a train heading west from Long Branch station to Port Credit station struck a man who appeared to have gotten his scooter stuck in the tracks.

Aikins says the exact age of the man is unknown, but she says he appeared to be elderly.

She says the train crew spotted the man and applied the emergency brake, but were unable to stop in time, adding that it takes between half a kilometre to two kilometres to fully stop.

Aikins says the train's passengers were then stranded for roughly three hours before they could be picked up and taken to a station.

"The train (was) stopped basically in the middle of nowhere in the dark with accident debris all over," she said. "It was not safe to get them out of the rain unfortunately."

Police were still investigating the incident Sunday morning, but all train service is operating normally.
