A 38-year-old man is in serious condition after he was shot during the course of a robbery in the Downsview area Friday morning.

Toronto Police say two suspects entered a retail location at 2881 Keele Street, near Wilson Avenue, and robbed the till.

Paramedics say they arrived at the scene to find a man suffering from a single gunshot wound.

He was rushed to a hospital trauma centre in serious but non-life-threatening condition.

Police say the two suspects, described as black males in their late 20s, fled the scene in a vehicle, possible a black Volkswagen Jetta.

A witness said he was in the parking lot of a small plaza that included a payday loan outlet having a smoke of a cigarette when he said he saw a woman running across Keele Street screaming for others to call the police.

Then he heard a single gunshot and saw a man staggering with blood all over his pants inside the payday loan store.

He said the victim works at the payday loans outlet.

Inside a nail spa next door, Julia Rauti says she heard a commotion, then a single gunshot, and ran with other patrons of the spa into the building’s basement to take cover.

A total of five schools in the area, Blaydon Public School, Downsview Public School and Downsview Secondary School, were placed in hold and secure.

Madonna Catholic School and St. Rafael Catholic School were also in hold and secure mode.

Classes continued as normal but nobody is allowed to enter or exit each building. All hold and secure orders were lifted after 1 p.m.
