A 19-year-old man has been charged in connection with two bank robberies in Markham and Toronto earlier this month.

Police were called to a bank in the area of Highway 407 and Ninth Line, shortly after 1 p.m. on June 2. Witnesses told police that a male suspect had entered the bank and approached one of the tellers. The suspect passed the teller a note asking for money.

Before any money was handed over, the suspect fled the scene in a silver Chevrolet Cobalt with tinted windows. No one was injured in the incident.

After a weeks-long investigation, officers executed a search warrant in Ajax on Monday. A suspect was arrested in connection with the Markham robbery, as well as another robbery that occurred June 1 in Toronto. No details have been provided on the June 1 robbery.

In a statement on Tuesday, York Regional Police said Nickolous Valiagas, 19, of Ajax has been charged with two counts of robbery and possession of a controlled substance.

The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with more information is asked to contact officers at 1-866-876-5423, ext. 6631, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
