Police have confirmed that human remains found in Kitchener, Ont. last week belong to a woman who disappeared in January.

Kate Lynn Reid, 51, was last seen in early January, and reported missing at the end of the month. On March 8, police announced they were treating her disappearance as a homicide.

Though they had not found her body, police charged Reid's roommate, 61-year-old Hugh Rayburn McColl, with second-degree murder and committing an indignity to human remains.

On Friday, Waterloo Regional Police said they'd discovered human remains near a building where Reid and McColl lived.

A post-mortem examination confirmed that the remains belonged to Reid, Waterloo Regional Police said in a statement Wednesday.
