Waterloo Regional Police have discovered human remains near a residence in Kitchener, Ont., which they believe may be connected to a missing persons case from earlier this year.

Police responded to a building at 10 Burn Place in Kitchener shortly after 4 p.m. on Friday, following a report of a discovery of human remains.

Homicide detectives are leading the investigation and said in a statement that they are "looking into the possibility of a link to the disappearance of Kate Lynn Reid."

Reid, 51, was last seen in early January and was reported missing at the end of that month.

On March 8, police announced they were investigating Reid's disappearance as a homicide and charged 61-year-old Hugh Rayburn McColl with second-degree murder and committing an indignity to human remains. At that time, police said that they had not yet located Reid’s body.

Reid allegedly lived in the building at 10 Burn Place with McColl, her roommate.

Friends told CTV Kitchener the two didn't know each other until Reid began looking for someone to split rent with.

Friend Roger Napper said he met McColl on one occasion, when he was visiting Reid.

“He was sitting there. I said ‘Hello,’ he went ‘Hi,’ and that was about all he spoke,” Napper told CTV News earlier this month.“He just sat there (and) didn’t say much of anything.”

Court documents allege that McColl killed the Reid on New Year’s Day, and disposed of her body sometime between then and Jan. 27.

Police said an autopsy has been scheduled in Hamilton for early next week to confirm the identity of the deceased and no other details will be released prior to the results.

There are no immediate public safety concerns in connection with the discovery of the remains and police are asking anyone with information to contact the Waterloo Regional Police Homicide Branch at 519-650-8500 ext. 8767 or Crime Stoppers 1-800-222-8477.
