Five people were taken to hospital – two via air ambulance – after a serious head-on collision in Clarington Tuesday.

The collision happened on Taunton Road and Darlington Clarke Townline Road at around 11:30 a.m.

According to Durham Regional police, a blue GMC Terrain was heading westbound on Taunton Road approaching Darlington Clarke Townline Road when it collided with a black Dodge Ram pick-up truck travelling eastbound.

A 69-year-old woman – the driver of the Terrain – suffered life-threatening injuries and a 16-year-old male passenger was seriously injured. Both were air-lifted to a Toronto area trauma centre and are listed as being in serious but stable condition.

An additional passenger in the Terrain – a 14-year-old girl – sustained serious injuries and was transported to Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto.

A 66-year-old male driver of the Dodge Ram and his 59-year-old passenger were also taken to local hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

An area surrounding Taunton and Darlington Clark Townline roads were closed for several hours as investigators with Durham Regional Police Traffic Branch and the Collision Investigation Unit probed the scene.
