Just under half of Ontarians are in favour of increasing the speed limit on the province's 400-series highways, according to a new poll.
The July 3rd Forum Research telephone survey -- which polled 810 Ontarians -- found that 48 per cent of respondent supported the idea of raising the speed limit on the 400-series highways. The speed limit on the highways is currently 100 kilometres per hour.
Support for overhauling the speed limits was strongest in northern Ontario (58 per cent), eastern Ontario (51 per cent), and among males (57 per cent).
"The usual suspects are the ones with the need for speed – younger males," Forum Research president Lorne Bozinoff said in a statement.
Meanwhile, 45 per cent of respondents were opposed to boosting the speed limits, and seven per cent were undecided.
The Forum Research poll was conducted one day after British Columbia's Transportation Minister Todd Stone announced that the 110 km/h speed limit on some of the province's highway routes would be increased to 120 km/h.
The poll is considered accurate within plus or minus three percentage points, 19 times out of 20.
