Toronto police say a 12-year-old girl is in serious condition at Sick Kids Hospital after she was struck by a vehicle along Danforth Avenue on Sunday evening.

Paramedics say the woman was in the area of Pharmacy and Danforth avenues at about 6:15 p.m. when she made contact with a vehicle. She was found unconscious at the scene.

A Toronto police traffic service sergeant said the girl was walking southbound on the east side of Pharmacy Avenue when she reportedly ran across Danforth Avenue on a red light when a car approached and struck her.

A witness said the victim flew through air after she was struck. Her shoe could be seen on a nearby side street.

Police said at one time that the victim was bleeding from the head.

Police say the driver of the vehicle, an adult male, remained at the scene and was not impaired. The matter is not considered to be criminal at this point.

Police closed Danforth Avenue in both directions between Wanstead and Pharmacy avenues. The southbound lane of Pharmacy Avenue is closed at Denton Avenue.
